The best ways to maintain your winter treatment results in the summer

Whether you wish to enhance your face, breasts, or body with a cosmetic procedure, or if you require reconstructive hand surgery, Dr. McCall and compassionate team at Lake Country Plastic & Hand Surgery here to provide you with the outstanding results you deserve.

After investing in skin treatments during the fall and winter it’s important to protect those results in the summer. Since many treatments cause sensitivity to sunlight, most opt to discontinue these treatments during warmer months. But then, what do you do for your skin? There are many ways to maintain and improve your skins quality in the summer months. Follow these guidelines and you’ll stay glowing all summer long!

Maintain the use of active ingredients

Your skin thrives when it’s given consistent care. One of the best things you can do for your skin in the summer is to keep your home care routines relatively the same. If you have been using a retinol nightly, continue to do that. If your skin enjoys a scrub once a week, maintain that routine. When used properly, your homecare products are safe to use all summer long, so, don’t be afraid to continue using them.

Hydration

Keeping your body and skin hydrated is so important while it’s hot out. Even though your skin may not be as flaky or tight during the summer as it is in the winter, doesn’t mean you don’t need any hydration. Dry skin and dehydrated skin are two different things and leaving the skin dehydrated can cause many issues such as dull skin, redness or irritation, and a compromised skin barrier. Using powerful but light weight hydrators is key to maintaining skin health in the summer. My favorite is LCP skins Hydrate and plump serum. This is a dual weight hyaluronic acid serum which means it contains different sizes of hyaluronic acid molecules which can treat every layer of the skin. The larger molecules stay near the surface of the skin, giving an immediate glow, while the smaller molecules are able to penetrate deeper, giving a lasting glow from within. It also contains copper to soothe the skin and gives the product a beautiful blue hue.

Sunscreen, hats, and shade

I believe it’s important to get outside as much as possible while it’s nice out in Wisconsin and I know I’m not the only one who feels this way. While enjoying the outdoors, the most important part of your skin care routine is sunscreen! Apply it daily, reapply before direct sun exposure, and apply every 2 hours while out in the sun. if you want to take a deeper dive into sunscreen I recommend checking out our blog post titled ‘Spring Sun-care’. Alongside sunscreen, wearing protective clothing and staying in the shade can also help minimize the damage the sun can do. Wearing a hat to protect your scalp and face and keeping your décolleté covered is what’s most important when it comes to maintaining your treatment results, however the whole body is susceptible to sun damage, so wear sunscreen whenever your skin is exposed and reapply often.

Accidents happen when it comes to sunburn

Avoid tanning and sunburn at all costs, however, if you do get a little crispy here is how you should treat your skin after sun exposure. Keep your skin cool. Use an ice cube to cool the skin up to twice a day. Avoid using scrubs or any harsh exfoliating ingredients until your skin has fully healed. This includes not picking at any peeling skin. Let it slough off on its own. How ever while you are avoiding exfoliants please add light weight hydrators. Aloe or hyaluronic acid serums are both great choices.

Continued treatment

Even though you won’t be having any laser facials or chemical peels done, it’s still important to continue treating your skin. There are plenty of sun-safe options to choose from. Keeping up with professional exfoliation is one of the best ways to elongate your treatment results. This keeps your skin functioning properly, removing any dead skin cells from the surface that may be contributing to acne, dullness, irritation, or flaky skin. Treatment options like the Signature Facial, HydraFacial, or Dermaplane Facial are all great choices. Even Secret RF treatments, which utilize radio frequency to rejuvenate the skin, can be a safe option during summer.
