Many factors can affect a patient’s final appearance after breast augmentation surgery. The varying characteristics of the implant, including its size, shape, profile, and filler type, all contribute to the overall results. Milwaukee plastic surgeon Tracy E. McCall offers this overview of breast implant profiles to help you understand your options.
Breast Implant Profiles
The profile of a breast implant refers to the amount of forward projection, or how much the implant sticks out from the chest. There are different types of breast implant profiles, ranging from low to high, giving more or less forward projection. The different types of breast implant profiles were designed to better suit different body types, allowing for proper shape and fullness specific to the individual patient. The type of implant profile used is based upon patient body size and desired results. You will want to discuss your desired results with your surgeon to ensure the proper profile is used.
Low Profile Breast Implants
Low profile breast implants have the least forward projection of the different types of implant profiles. Low profile breast implants are most suitable for patients with wide frames. This is because the low profile implant provides fuller coverage across the chest than the moderate or high profiles. Low profile breast implants are able to cover the natural diameter of the breast without sticking out too far, creating a more natural looking breast. Using moderate or high profile implants on a wide framed patient may cause the breasts to look unnatural by projecting out too far.
Moderate Profile Breast Implants
Moderate profile breast implants, also called standard profile, are the most commonly used profile. Moderate profile implants project slightly more than low profile implants and are generally suitable for average framed women. In some cases, women with slightly wide frames may find moderate profile implants suitable for their body type. Women with narrow frames should avoid moderate and low profile implants. If low or moderate profile implants are used on a narrow framed patient, there’s a possibility the breast implant may reach to the underarm, causing the breasts to look too wide.
High Profile Breast Implants
High profile breast implants are most suitable for narrow framed women, offering the most forward projection. High profile breast implants add fullness to the front of the chest without widening the breasts, which is why they are the favored option for narrow framed women. High profile breast implants are generally not well suited for wide framed women, as the implant may not be wide enough to fill the width of the breast.
