If your cheekbones lack definition due to the roundness of your cheeks, then having a buccal fat reduction can help tone down and reshape your face to what you desire. Buccal fat procedures have a high patient satisfaction rate and can boost your self-confidence and help you achieve slender features. At Lake Country Plastic and Hand Surgery, we will briefly review the procedure, how it works, and how it can benefit your appearance.

How Buccal Fat Removal Can Tone Your Cheeks and Give You Long-Lasting Results

Buccal fat removal reduces how pronounced the cheeks are by repositioning and removing areas of buccal fat from the face. Buccal fat is a type of fat found throughout the midsection of the face, causing faces to appear more rounded. These pads of buccal fat can often cause faces to appear more youthful and naturally softer, but for those who feel that their face is disproportionate with the rest of their body, a buccal fat reduction may benefit them.

Getting a buccal fat removal procedure is a highly personalized choice. It can effectively address patients’ concerns with full, rounded cheeks and a desire for a more slender face to feel more proportionate with their bodies. It is considered an excellent procedure for those with realistic expectations, who are relatively healthy, and who don’t smoke.

If you’ve been frustrated by signs of buccal fat along your cheeks, then a buccal fat reduction may be the procedure for you. This procedure can work to contour your face by slimming down and removing areas of buccal fat from the cheek midsection. After your consultation, your plastic surgeon will schedule an appointment for your surgery. During your appointment, your surgeon will perform a buccal fat removal under the following steps:

  • Preparation and Anesthesia: Most surgeons will require that before your procedure, you get medical evaluations and lab tests to ensure that you are healthy for your treatment. This procedure is typically performed in hospitals and at practices, and your surgeon may recommend medications to help improve your results. During the procedure, your surgeon will administer general anesthesia and intravenous sedation to help ensure that your surgery is a pain-free and risk-free experience.
  • Incision and Removal: During the procedure, your surgeon will make incisions along the inside of the mouth and along the inner cheek area. These incisions will be made on both sides of the face to expose the buccal fat pads. Next, they will gently press on the fat pads to expose them more and then surgically remove the fat pads.
  • Closing and Recovery: Once removed, your surgeon will close the incisions with dissolvable sutures. During your recovery, it’s often recommended that patients remain on a liquid diet for several days and use special mouth rinses to reduce the risk of infection. They will provide post-operational instructions on how to care for your surgical site following the procedure and schedule follow-up appointments to help assess your progress.

It can take several months for you to see the final results, but after recovery, your teeth will gradually contour to their new, slender appearance.
