What to Expect during Liposuction Recovery

Whether you wish to enhance your face, breasts, or body with a cosmetic procedure, or if you require reconstructive hand surgery, Dr. McCall and compassionate team at Lake Country Plastic & Hand Surgery here to provide you with the outstanding results you deserve.

The very brief recovery time is one reason that liposuction is so popular. Though the treatment can achieve dramatic results, you can usually resume your normal activities within a few days. Perhaps best of all, following the short healing process, results could last the rest your life. During your consultation, Dr. Tracy McCall will evaluate your goals and skin tone to determine your candidacy for liposuction. If she decides that the procedure is right for you, she will also tell you what you can expect during your recovery. By following specific protocol, you can further speed your healing and ensure treatment success. To learn more about the liposuction healing timeline, contact our Milwaukee, WI practice today.

The Day of Your Liposuction Procedure

Liposuction is an outpatient procedure that involves very few risks. Nevertheless, because you will receive general anesthesia before your treatment, you will need to remain in an observation room when the surgery is finished. Your team will monitor your heart rate and oxygen levels to make sure that you do not experience any complications as a result of the anesthesia. We will keep you comfortable and relaxed as you wake up. Because it will take a while for the medication to leave your system, you should find a ride home.

Liposuction Side Effects

Liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure, but it is still surgery. Therefore, it is normal to experience some short-term side effects in the first few days. These side effects can include:

  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Tenderness and inflammation – You can usually treat this with mild, non-prescription pain medication.
  • Seromas – If fluid accumulates under your skin, the problem will often resolve itself on its own. However, Dr. McCall can easily treat the seroma here in the office.

The side effects mentioned above are normal, but if they suddenly grow worse, you should contact our office immediately.

The Week after Liposuction

For the first week or so after your procedure, you should take it easy. Get plenty of rest, and avoid strenuous exercise. Be sure to take frequent, brief walks around the house during the first few days. This very mild exertion will get your blood flowing and further your recovery. Dr. McCall will provide a compression garment or bandages right after your surgery. These will stimulate healing and help promote firm, youthful skin that will conform to your slimmer contours. It is vital that you wear your bandages or compression garment constantly, removing it only to shower. Avoid baths for several days after liposuction.

Two to Three Weeks after Liposuction

Though you should be able to return to work within a week, you should continue to take it easy. Do not engage in heavy lifting or strenuous aerobic activity until Dr. McCall gives permission. In addition, you should keep wearing your compression bandages for several weeks.

Full Liposuction Recovery

It will usually be a few months before swelling subsides completely. At this time, you will enjoy the final treatment results and your slimmer, firmer figure. Even before the swelling is completely gone, you should begin to notice satisfactory treatment results and an enhanced appearance.
